Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is a busy year for students. They are continuing to work on their executive functioning skill. They are also focusing on growing their Portrait of a Graduate (POG) skills. They are working hard to be collaborators, communicators, and goal-driven learners. Fifth graders work to dig deeper in their math and reading skills.
In Language Arts, students work on
- organization in writing
- grammar and mechanics
- reading comprehension skills
- research
- oral speaking skills
In Math, students focus on
- Fractions and decimals
- geometry and measurement
- more complex problem-solving
Fifth grade is a big year in science. Students will take the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) science test on top of the material learned in fourth grade. New topics include
- landforms
- force, motion and energy
- light and sound
- magnetism and electricity
Social Studies will explore ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, India, Greece, and Rome. They will use their understanding of interdependence and interrelationships to complete the Global Awareness Technology Project.
Fifth-grade students will take the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests in science, reading and math.
