What Makes Deer Park Elementary Unique and Special
It's a Great Day to "Be Your Best Bucky!"
10 Reasons Deer Park Stands Out
Academic Achievement
The availability of academic programs at Deer Park is broad and inclusive. It offers full-time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services in grades 3 to 6. The program is designed to meet the needs of advanced learners.
Student Programs
Afterschool clubs and programs that our students enjoy include cooking club, robotics, Lego Building, Overtime Athletics, Chess, Science Alive, and so much more!
Staff Recognition
Deer Park strives to provide a positive working environment and climate for all employees through weekly staff shout-outs, teacher leadership opportunities, and staff end-of-year recognition and awards.
In 2024 the Deer Park Staff recognized Emily Tobin as our Outstanding Teacher, Doris Alvarado De Ponce as our Outstanding Operational Staff Member and Heather Hitz as our Outstanding Leader. We are so proud of them!
Community Engagement
Our community is invited weekly to participate in our Fun Fit Friday activity to promote fitness and family connections. Administrators offer monthly coffee chats in the building to share school information and initiatives and answer questions in an intimate setting. Students are recognized quarterly for demonstrating POG and citizenship skills and parents are invited to celebrate. Our curriculum nights focus on literacy, equity, and math skills and strategies to provide practice opportunities for families.
School Culture
Our social committee provides monthly rotating staff breakfasts and opportunities to gather staff together to socialize and build relationships. Our climate survey results are positive and focus on staff voices and support. Deer Park prides itself on its welcoming atmosphere that is inclusive.
High Impact Tutors
Deer Park has 3 High Impact tutors that work with students throughout the day to help. They focus on closing the gap in math and reading skills as they support all grade levels.
Facilities and Resources
Deer Park has just added a new innovation space called the Bucky's Learning Lab. There students can explore cross content experiences through hands on learning and creation. Students work on the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate skills while connecting to their school curriculum. This lab was funded through the Asha-Jyothi (AJ) Foundation, a volunteer-based non-profit organization. They gave Deer Park a grant award of $102,376.21 to support STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math).
Mentors and Buddies at Deer Park
Buddy mentors from Westfield HS support students’ SEL and citizenship skills by providing strong community role models. Students from the local High School integrate monthly with our students to help build their confidence and social skills. It is always a treat to see our former DP students in the building giving back to their community.
Our Zones of Regulation program teaches students to identify their feelings and how to employ emotional regulation strategies. This curriculum is used school wide to empower students using common language and methodologies.
Student Growth and Progress
Our Spring 2024 SOL reading results remained strong, with a pass rate of 87%. Our math SOL results increased to a 90% pass rate. Many of our subgroups improved in both areas. Students received additional support to improve academic progress as needed through our high-impact tutors and our buck block intervention time. Our school-wide academic challenges promote student engagement and academic growth.
Deer Park is GREEN and PURPLE!
Green - Our Eco Club involves students in supporting our school’s efficiency and eco-friendly focus by recycling. In our first year we gained Silver Status through our weekly recycling efforts. Students also participated in the Trout in the Classroom program where they helped to repopulate the local trout shortage in Virginia. The programs concludes with the release of trout into local streams.
Purple - Deer Park is proud of our Military Purple Star designation. We have a strong connection with our military families as we partner with Cub Run Elementary for PTA Military Family Nights. Our student ambassador team meets with every new military family student to make them feel welcome and to provide them with information on our program.
