Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE.   For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener  webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or  contact your student's teacher.

Hello Deer Park!

The PTA is continuing its initiative to provide each and every student with a free, gently used book during Book Fair week via Bucky's Bonus Books (formerly known as the Free Book Fair). Bucky's Bonus Books (BBB) has a sign-up for volunteers to help children select books this week and help is still needed! The sign-up indicates which classes will be attending BBB during each time slot so that you can sign up to help when your student's class will be selecting books. Help is needed setting up after school tomorrow (Tues. 4/23) as well as during the school day Wed. 4/24 - Fri. 4/26. I plan to be present and volunteering throughout BBB, volunteers will not be there alone!

If you are able to help, please click here to sign up:
www.signupgenius.com

Thank you once again for the amazing books donated by our community that make Bucky's Bonus Books possible!  The donations and volunteer time are truly appreciated by the students and the PTA.

Dear Deer Park Families:

Hello from the Deer Park Student Council Association!  The SCA will be sponsoring its annual community food drive, beginning next week (Monday, 04/15/2024)!

As we considered the drive this year, one number came to mind: 42424.  Our goal is simple: we hope to raise 424 pounds of donated food by 4/24/24.

To add a fun wrinkle this year, the SCA’s student leaders offered awesome themes that you may choose to participate in!  The themes are:

  • Taco Tuesday: seasonings, hard shells, canned/jarred salsa, rice bags, cans of refried beans, canned chicken, canned tomatoes
  • They Say It’s Your Birthday!: disposable baking pan, cake mix, frosting, cooking oil (olive, canola, vegetable, etc.), baking flour, sugar, brown sugar
  • Let’s Grill Out: salt, pepper, condiments (bottles of ketchup, mustard, mayo), jarred pickles, canned vegetables, chips
  • Something easy, please: Chef Boyardee pasta cups, Hamburger Helper boxes, Pasta Helpers
  • Pasta Night: Boxes of pasta, risotto, jars of pasta sauces
  • Breakfast!: pancake/waffle mix, cooking oils, unopened boxes of oatmeal, grits, cereals, coffee (ground only), individual low sugar juice boxes

If your family would like to donate, please do; however, don’t feel like you have to donate all of the items from a category!  Any and all donations of the above items are welcome and appreciated.

All donations must be unopened and in original packaging; they will be given to FCPS Ignite Partner  and Deer Park Community Partner, Western Fairfax Christian Ministries.  This charity is open to any member of the Centreville and Chantilly community.

Should you have any questions, please reach out to Mr. Wallace ([email protected]), or Ms. Arzt ([email protected]) .

Sincerely,

Matthew Wallace and Catherine Arzt

☀️ Total Solar Eclipse on April 8 ☀️

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

At Deer Park Elementary School, out of an abundance of caution, we will provide students with approved eyewear at dismissal. Please talk to your student about keeping the glasses on to safely view the eclipse.

Maintaining our priority on safety, Deer Park will not be sending students outside after 2 PM. Students and staff will be provided with the NASA livestream link as an option to safely observe the eclipse.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.

Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal), and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation or you are welcome to pick your student up early to view the eclipse at home.

FCPS has a page that shares information about Solar Eclipses at https://www.fcps.edu/solar-eclipse.

Eid al-Fitr

Wednesday, April 10, is an FCPS holiday and all schools and offices will be closed.

In Islam, Eid-al-Fitr is a three day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims dress in new clothes, give charity, and pray in congregation. Eid is celebrated with the exchange of presents and delicious food with family and friends

Good morning Deer Park Families,

We have heard the concerns regarding our current recess and lunch procedures and appreciate the positive communication and advocacy we have received from our students, staff, and families. Here at Deer Park, we are committed to incorporating student voice and community feedback into our day to day operations while ensuring the safety of our school community.

In response to the feedback we have received, we will be reviewing and adjusting our policies without compromising the safety of our students. Over the next several weeks, we will be surveying and meeting with students and staff to discuss potential improvements for next school year. The response from our school community holds merit in the upcoming policy adjustments. At this time, both recess and lunch are evolving to meet the needs of our students in the best way possible. This goes without compromising their safety, social development, and behavioral decisions while considering the input from those who know them best, their parents.

While we review our current recess practices, we will be ordering additional recess equipment to boost the recess experience in zones other than the playground. We ask that you remind your students to treat school property with respect to guarantee the longevity of these new additions.

As always, we encourage parents to volunteer in our school building by contacting their student’s teacher or our main office to maintain uplifting relationships in our school community. Finally, we have attached the class placement form should you request your child be placed with certain peers in the upcoming school year. We value your feedback and encourage you to reach out at any time.

Sincerely,

Bob D’Amato
Principal

FCPS Family Engagement Survey

Parents/caregivers received the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey last Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school.

Survey topics include communication, student success, advocacy and welcoming environment. The survey provides a key opportunity to hear family perspectives and voices, and receive feedback on your family’s engagement experience within FCPS

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage  for more information. Your voice matters!

Paper surveys, translated in nine languages, are available in the school office.

The Survey Opened March 3rd and will close on March 22nd.   Sunday, March 10th
Daylight Saving Time Begins

Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour!

As a result of the time change, some students may be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Ramadan

The first full day of Ramadan is on Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. Deer Park is sensitive to the needs of our families and want everyone to be comfortable. Students observing Ramadan are offered a private space in which to fast or pray should they chose to do so.  We encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher or the office regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/medication and silent reflection spaces, times and instruction.

Learn more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances  (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips and other FCPS scheduled events are not held on these observance days.  See the complete 23-24 school year calendar here.

National School Social Work Week

March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites.

Meet Deer Park's School Social Worker, Ms. Robyn Rickerby!

I have been at Deer Park since the 2020-2021 school year and love helping the students and families at Deer Park Elementary!

As a School Social Worker, I support students in a variety of ways, such as assessing and addressing social and emotional factors that may impact students in and outside the classroom, applying a social work lens to address any behavioral needs that students may present at school, and removing barriers in order for students to achieve their academic potential. Also, I work with parents to provide consultation and/or resources with the community. I enjoy working with students on a one-to-one basis and in a group setting. In addition to my day-to-day school duties, I also serve on a FCPS’ regional crisis team, I am a group facilitator of “Sibshops” (a group that  provides support and guidance to siblings of children with special or developmental needs), and Secretary of Fairfax Association of School Social Workers.

Students will be asked to disguise “somebunny” as a book character! Bunnies will be displayed in the library. The top 10 disguises will receive a prize!

Students can pick up a bunny template from the library. Be creative in disguising your bunny!

All entries are due to the Library by March 22.

PreKindergarten and Early Headstart

FCPS pre-K and Early Head Start programs provide a high-quality early learning experience for qualifying income-eligible children ages 6 weeks to 4 years. Learn more at www.fcps.edu/prek!

  • Pre-K prioritizes 4-year-old applicants but also accepts applications for children 3 years old by September 30.
  • Early Head Start is located at three elementary schools — Clearview, Crestwood, and Dogwood — and accepts applications from pregnancy to 2 years old.

Both programs are for income eligible families living in Fairfax County. Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, however space is limited and provided based on need, not “first come, first serve.”

Information for ways that families can submit the application can be found on the back of the application.

Deer Park has an inclusive PreK/Head Start program that started in the 2023-24 school year to provide a quality preschool experience with comprehensive services free to qualifying families, who reside in Fairfax County. Please apply now for the 2024-25 school year.

Applications are accepted online,  email ([email protected]), or by mail or in person at the office located at 7423 Camp Alger Avenue, Falls Church, VA 22042.

If you a have question about the application process or status, please call 703-208-7900 (English) or 703-208-7901 (Spanish).

March 5 - Student Holiday

March 5th is a student holiday / school planning day / Presidential Primary

The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the safe and efficient administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.

Central offices and school offices will remain open. SACC will remain open, as on other professional work days.

March 10th
Daylight Saving Time Begins

Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour!

As a result of the time change, some students may be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Greetings Deer Park Families,

A lot has happened over the last few weeks and I wanted to give you a brief update to our Science Alive Lobby.

Fish Tanks – We are GREEN with envy here at Deer Park. While we thought we had gotten control of our algae problem we realized that our filter system just wasn’t strong enough for the large tanks that we have. We are in the process of completely cleaning and renewing the water in each tank. Please don’t worry – our fish are just fine! They are all living happily together in the first tank while the second tank renews it system – this takes about a week!  We hope to have cleaner / clearer water for the fish and for you in the near future!

Eagle Watch – if you have noticed we have placed 2 different eagle habitats on the large screen monitors in the lobby outside of the gym.  We are closely monitoring our eagles Jackie and Shadow from Big Bear and as we expect the eggs to start “pipping” on the 29th – then it will take a few days for the new eagles to hatch. Please visit our lobby and check out the informational poster!
