Discover NOVA Stem Day

NOVA (Northern Virginia Community College) will hold "DISCOVER NOVA STEM DAY" at their Loudoun Campus (21200 Campus Dr, Sterling, VA 20164) on Saturday, December 2, from 10am to 1 pm.  This showcase includes hands-on activities, workshops, and exhibits for students aged 5-12.  For more information and how to register visit the website here.

Staying Healthy this Cold & Flu Season

Cases of RSV, the flu, and other viruses often rise this time of year. It is important for students to wash their hands regularly and cover their coughs and sneezes. Please monitor your child’s health daily and keep them at home if they are sick. Visit FCPS' Health and Safety Guidance document for more tips.

🙋 Student Attendance and Engagement

During the Academic Matters segment of the November 9 School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid discussed student attendance and engagement. Attendance and absenteeism rates are one measure for Goal 2 of our Strategic plan.

Chronic absenteeism — which is defined as a student missing 10% or more of school for any reason — is a concern across Virginia school districts. Although FCPS continues to outperform the state average in attendance rates, we are tracking chronic absenteeism closely.

Data shows that:

  • Missing just 10% of school — just two days a month — negatively affects a student’s academic performance.
  • Only 17% of students who were chronically absent in both kindergarten and first grade were reading proficiently in third grade, compared to 64% of those with good attendance.
  • Students who fail to read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than students who achieve proficiency to drop out of high school.
  • By sixth grade, chronic absenteeism becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.

Attendance is critical for academic success!

Missing School Over the Holidays

Looking ahead to the holiday season, if missing school is unavoidable, please speak with your child’s teachers in advance to create a plan for making up missed work. Homework is not given in advance of the absence and a homework packet cannot make up for the interaction and learning that happens in the classroom.

Visit FCPS’ website for more resources.

Deer Park Elementary School Community,

As we approach Thanksgiving, we want to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to all of you for your dedication and commitment to our students and our school.

We are thankful for our students, who come to school each day eager to learn, have fun, take risks, and grow. We are thankful for their curiosity, their creativity, and their resilience. We are thankful for the way they support each other and make our school community a welcoming, positive, safe, and inclusive place where all students have an opportunity to be heard and seen.

We are thankful for our teachers and staff, who are passionate about their work and committed to providing our students with the best possible education. They go above and beyond every day to create a positive learning environment where students can thrive and grow.

We are thankful for you, our parents, and guardians, who are our partners in education. We appreciate your ongoing support that impacts your children's learning at home and in the classroom, and we appreciate the important role all parents play in our school community.

During this Thanksgiving season, we encourage you to take some time to reflect on all the things you are grateful for, and to also reflect on all the learning to this point. Spend time with your loved ones, enjoy the delicious food, and give thanks for the many blessings in your life.

On behalf of the entire Deer Park Elementary School staff, we wish you all a happy, healthy, and peaceful Thanksgiving! Please remember that the school will be closed from Wednesday, November 22, 2023, through Friday, November 24, 2023, for the Thanksgiving break. We will reopen on Monday, November 27, 2023!

Sincerely,

Mr. D’Amato & Mrs. Hitz

Fundraising Update: Fun Run and Charleston Wrap

Great Job Deer Park!! Our final numbers came in for the Fun Run. We raised $25,673 which is more than last year and we had more students participate.

Final results from the Charleston Wrap fundraiser - AMAZING job Deer Park!

We realize the timing of this fundraiser was rough as it started the day after the Fun Run fundraising ended...it was rough for us too but worthwhile for these amazing profit margins! Really good wrapping paper, candy, and gifts too   We sold $6266 worth of items which surpasses our goal of $5000.  We raised $2349 for the school.

The students voted for the $20K Fun Run Incentive and decided to tape the teachers and staff to the wall.  Check out the video on Instagram and Facebook.

The 2nd graders had fun playing kickball for having the most kids registered.

If you have any feedback for the PTA about the Fun Run please click here.

DEER PARK ES READING CHALLENGE

One of the goals that our staff set for itself last year was to increase our student’s usage of the Lexia/Power Up reading program. This program is an adaptive blended learning program that accelerates the development of literacy skills for students of all abilities, helping them to make the shift from learning to read to reading to learn. There has been significant data collected to show that Lexia usage directly correlates with an increase in iReady reading scores which in turn increases Reading SOL scores as well.

We would like to continue this work during the 2023-24 school year by holding two schoolwide/Power Up challenges. Our first challenge began on Monday, October 2nd and will end on Tuesday, October 31st. During this challenge, our goal is for all students in kindergarten through second grade to average 15 minutes on Lexia/Power Up per school day and our students in third through sixth grade to average 20 minutes per school day. If your child would like to work towards additional minutes at home, they can do so. However, it is important for their own growth that they receive no adult assistance. Our overall goal for the entire month of October is for our students to work on Lexia/Power Up for a total of 175,000 minutes. Minutes will be closely monitored and growth toward our goal will be shared both on the morning news and on a meter in the front hallway.

If our students can achieve this goal, as a reward, we will be holding a, “School’s Out: Bucky’s Fun Day” on Thursday, November 2nd.

On this day, we will have morning meeting as usual, and then break into grade level groups to work through activities and challenges that we hope will inspire, engage, and create team building opportunities for all our students. Activities will vary from one grade to the next, but may include board games, cooking, arts and crafts, sports, and minute to win it games among others.

On this day, students will have lunch and recess at their regularly scheduled times.

Our day will end with a closing reflection conversation with their homeroom teachers and a special treat provided by the school.

We look forward to cheering our students along as they work towards a common goal and are excited to see the reading growth that comes from it as well. We do truly hope our celebration on November 2nd is a special day for everyone!

Mark your calendar

Friday, November 3rd is the end of the
1st Quarter of school.

Students will be dismissed at 1:25 p.m.

Monday, November 6 - No School for students
Tuesday, November 7 - No School for students

Please plan accordingly.

The students enjoyed music at lunch today for earning the $15,000 incentive last week. The kids voted on what activity the teachers will do and the activity is…duct tape them to the wall. The students will get cotton candy at lunch in the future for raising $24,000. The grade with the highest percentage registered wins a kickball game vs. staff & parents! In addition, the three grades that raise the most money will receive an extra recess OR PJ Day with Movie!

Deer Park Parents & Guardians,

The kids had a blast at the Fun Run last Friday. Thank you for all your hard work fundraising!! Because of you, we are at 85% of our goal. Fundraising continues until October 20th -  let's see if we can reach the $28,000 and earn a GoNoodle Dance Party for the whole school!

On Friday 10/20, there will be a final "regular" raffle on the DPES Morning News. The Golden Ticket Raffle will be held on Monday 10/23 on the Morning News.

In case you were not aware, there is a competition between grades to see who can get the most percentage of students registered for the Fun Run and the competition continues until Friday 10/20!

The grade with the highest percentage registered wins a kickball game vs. staff & parents!

Currently,  2nd Grade is in first place with 50.70% registered, 1st Grade is in a close second place with 49.32% registered, and Kindergarten rounds out the current Top 3 with 47.89% of students registered.

The remainder of the grades are as follows:  Pre-K/Head-Start at 20.00%, Multi-Age at 28.57%, 3rd grade at 45.59%, 4th grade at 44.05%, 5th grade at 45.45%, and 6th grade at 46.67%

The competition is tight!

In addition, the three grades that raise the most money will receive an extra recess OR PJ Day with Movie!  The amount raised is measured on an average amount raised per student per grade to adjust for the different sizes between grades.

Money raised during the Fun Run funds the majority of the PTA budget and we all would like to continue to help funding two field trips per year, assemblies, community events, teacher conferences (that benefit students), contributions to the calming pods throughout school, teacher appreciation, and everything else our students and community has grown to love and expect.

There is still time to register and share your donation page. If you register your student their name will be put on a Fun Run sign and displayed at the Fall Festival:

Register your student for the Fun Run here (previous log-ins should still work)getmovinfundhub.com

Sharing your child's page on social media and via email are the most effective methods to get donations. Make sure to share from the FundHub portal using the "Share" button to receive credit. If you would like to avoid fees, donations of cash or checks to Deer Park ES PTA can be brought to the front office but make sure to include your student's name and teacher for them to receive credit by Friday October 20th.

We know you have all been working hard to fundraise - the finish line is in sight, let's make it to the finish and bring in these last few thousand dollars Deer Park! Cheers for all the money raised to date and to all the people who have fundraised and donated so far.

Bucky's Fun Run is tomorrow!

Tomorrow is Fun Run day!!! The weather is going to be perfect. The kids will be running laps, doing fun exercises, and having a freeze pop at the end. We will have water but feel free to send a water bottle with your child. They will receive their shirt that morning but make sure they wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

The School is only at 65% of our goal. In order to have all the fun events the PTA has planned, support for teacher conferences and teacher appreciation, and field trips for our children we need to reach our goal of $28,000.  Fundraising continues to October 20th so there is still time to register your child and raise money. Raffles will continue next week with incentives being sent home every couple of days.

Federal Impact Aid Survey

The Impact Aid Program is a federal program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program’s mission is to reimburse local school districts for local revenues lost due to the presence of federally owned, and therefore tax exempt, property. Your support in identifying students with federal connections will ensure that FCPS can obtain its fair share of grant funds from this program.

New this year! Submit your form electronically!

FCPS is pleased to announce that the Federal Impact Aid Survey will be available electronically through your ParentVUE account on October 16th. For families that do not have access to ParentVUE or prefer to complete a paper form, a printed form will be provided by the school after October 31st.

Please visit the FCPS website  for steps to access the survey in ParentVue.

A completed survey is required for each school-age child in the household.

Need help creating a SIS ParentVue account? This video walks through the steps to set up your account. Find out more about SIS ParentVue here.

Free COVID-19 Tests

Every U.S. household can place an order to receive four more free COVID-19 rapid tests delivered directly to their home.

Review health and safety guidance for schools to stay up to date on the best ways to prevent the spread of disease, and for information on when students should stay home from school.

Attendance Matters

Every day counts at Deer Park! Regular attendance is crucial for the academic success of all students. Studies have repeatedly proven that students with better attendance records perform better in school and are more likely to graduate high school on time.

How You Can Help:

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Don’t let your child stay home unless he/she is truly sick. Keep in mind that complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.

When scheduling trips or family events, try to use weekends and school holidays, and refer to the FCPS Calendar when planning. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

Visit the FCPS website for attendance resources.

Deer Park PTA Information www.deerparkespta.org Bucky’s Fun Run October 13th, 2023 Tomorrow is Bucky’s Fun Run.  We are at 65% of our goal.

Even though the Fun Run is tomorrow, there is still time to register and share your page on Facebook, via text or email, and raise money for the school and earn prizes and raffle tickets. Fundraising goes until October 20th and the Golden Ticket raffle will be on October 23rd.

Incentives will be delivered to school about twice per week until fundraising concludes so be on the lookout for Bucky tattoos, Bucky Croc Charms, and Deer Park Sunglasses.

If you want to send in cash/check just put your childs name and teacher on it and make checks out to Deer Park ES PTA.  The front office has an envelope for them.

We need Volunteers to help with the Fun Run event on October 13th.  If you would like to Volunteer please click here to sign up to cheer, set up/tear down, or all day.  You can also come during your child’s time and cheer them on.

We hit $15,000 earlier this week so the kids will have music at lunch next week. The kids enjoyed a free recess on Tuesday. The next whole school incentive is to pick what activity the Principal will do. Lets see if we can make it. The Grade that has the most registered students will win a class vs staff/parent Kickball game. The top 3 grades that raise the most money will earn a recess or PJ day and movie.

Fun, Fit Friday Tomorrow!

Dear Deer Park Families,

We are excited to begin using our Deer Park track again for our morning community building each week. This year, we will be moving from Mondays to Fridays. As part of our wellness initiative, we invite you and your child(ren) to Fun Fit Friday. Students in all grade levels (PK-6) are welcome to participate, as well as parents and teachers!

Fun Fit Friday will meet on Friday mornings from 8:10 - 8:30 AM beginning on Friday, September 29 and run through Friday, December 1st. We will then resume in March.

This is an excellent opportunity for your child to meet new friends, enjoy the benefits of exercising, and develop an appreciation for fitness. We hope this program builds self-confidence and improves fitness levels among our students and within the community. Everyone is welcome to join us!

If it is raining or the track surroundings are too muddy, then we will cancel for that Friday.  There will be communication sent out the morning of by 7:45 a.m.  If you do not receive Deer Park News You Choose updates, please sign up at this link: News You Choose

A huge “THANK YOU” to the Deer Park PTA and community for your continued support to make this track possible in partnership with DPES.

We look forward to seeing you on the track!

Sincerely,

Mr. D’Amato and Mrs. Hitz

October 4th is Walk and Roll to school day! This is a great event to promote physical activity, teach safe pedestrian and bicycling skills and awareness of how walkable and bikeable a community is and sharing time with classmates and parents!

It’s fun! Remember the thrill of riding a bike for the first time or walking or rolling to school on the first day? There’s a feeling of joy and independence—a sense of adventure—that doesn’t fade.

If you walk or bike to school on October 4, please enter the school at the front entrance so we can count all our walkers and bikers.

Thank you for your support!

Red Ribbon Week

Enrique (Kiki) Camarena was a Mexican-American man working for the DEA after formerly serving in various positions such as the Marine Corps, as a fireman, a police officer, and a deputy sheriff in California. In 1985 he had been on assignment in Mexico for four years. And he was on the trail of the country’s biggest marijuana and cocaine traffickers. He was getting close to exposing a multi-billion dollar drug pipeline until he was kidnapped that February. He was headed to lunch with his wife when he was last seen being thrown into a van by masked men. His body wasn’t discovered until a month later.

After his death, “Camarena Clubs” were launched in his hometown of Calexico, California. Hundreds wore red ribbons and pledged to lead a drug-free life in his honor. President Ronald Reagan was in office at the time. The club members presented a proclamation to First Lady Nancy Reagan which brought the red ribbon pledge national attention. The campaign became official in 1988 by the National Family Partnership, President Reagan, and the “Just Say No” creator, Mrs. Reagan, as honorary chairpersons.

Red Ribbon Week is now celebrated annually from
October 23-31st.
