Martin Luther King Day (Holiday)/Inauguration Day

We honor and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his dedication to equality and serving others. #MLKDay #OurFCPS

Schools and offices will be closed on
Monday, January 20,
for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.
See the complete school year calendar.

2nd Quarter End

Tuesday, January 28th is the last day of the 2nd quarter and is a full day of school.

Wednesday, January 29th is a Teacher Workday,
NO School for Students.

See the full school year calendar here.

Literacy News Benchmark

The literacy team presented at a PTA meeting to introduce parents and families to the new Benchmark curriculum that we are using this year. The slide deck  of the information is available if you need a refresher or were unable to attend.

Lexia

We have had many students complete levels in Lexia. We enjoy celebrating the students by putting their names on the morning news and giving them a certificate with a small token. However, we have noticed that students are racing through the levels to get the achievement mark, but they are not actually learning the content. This is causing many of our students to be working in areas that are currently too difficult. At Deer Park, we are going to have students who score below 80% on the level skills check repeat that level. We will deliver certificates for students once they have achieved 80% or higher. Students should not be completing Lexia at home without teacher permission. Parents are reminded that any Lexia work should be done independently so we are able to tell exactly where the student is struggling and succeeding.. Students were not reassessed for their Lexia level at the beginning of the year so there are students that are currently placed too low or too high. If your child is telling you the lessons are too easy or too difficult, please reach out to either the classroom teacher or the literacy team.

Mid-Year Assessments

We are going to be starting our mid-year assessments soon. Once the window closes, you will be able to find your student scores under the documents tab of Parent View. Please communicate absences to the teacher so we can make sure we are getting the students assessed by the deadlines. Once that data has been completed an analyzed, additional students may qualify for reading plans. We will be in touch if your student is on a reading plan. For students that have already been on a reading plan, the progress monitoring assessments have been uploaded so please check out their progress. The current reading plans will continue so we will only be in touch if there are changes. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions about the plan.

Literacy Night

Literacy Night is coming! We are excited to announce that we will have a Literacy Night on January 22 from 6-8 PM. We are planning to have activities for each area that supports reading for all levels. We are also going to be providing family resources to support families working together to strengthen reading skills. This event is designed for families to experience together. Our theme is a cozy winter. We are inviting all families to come in school appropriate pajamas.

Questions?  Please reach out to Stephanie Jennings  or Beka Hartl with any questions.

Good afternoon Deer Park Families,

We hope you are staying warm and cozy while enjoying these extra days off. You can help support a smooth transition back to school with some planning and encouragement so our students are ready for a successful start to 2025!

Re-establish a consistent sleep routine.

After time off, it is common for sleep schedules to shift. A consistent sleep routine is vital for your child's focus and well-being. Aim for at least 9-10 hours of sleep each night for elementary-aged children. A well-rested child will be more alert and ready to learn.

Streamline Morning Preparations

Mornings are hectic, so planning ahead can make a big difference. Help your child get back into the rhythm of preparing for school by setting out clothes, packing backpacks and organizing lunches the night before. Encourage your child to wake up with enough time for a healthy breakfast which will give them the energy they need for the day. A positive, calm morning routine sets the tone for a successful school day.

Read 20-30 Minutes Every Night

Reading is a cornerstone of academic success. Keeping up with the habit of reading each night in any language, whether you read together or they read on their own, helps your child stay engaged with learning. Consider making reading a cozy, relaxing part of the bedtime routine.

Motivate!

Encourage your child to make their best effort and take pride in their work and always try their hardest. Whether completing an assignment, participating in class or working on new skills. Praise them for their effort and perseverance. Recognizing and celebrating hard work reinforces the importance of doing their best and builds confidence.

Reinforce School-Wide Rules and Expectations

Remind your student of school expectations that guide behavior and classroom conduct. Emphasize the importance of showing respect for others, listening to teachers and staff, using kind words and taking responsibility for their actions. By reinforcing these expectations at home, we can ensure a sense of shared responsibility for a positive and respectful learning environment.

We look forward to partnering with you in your child's education and seeing them learn new things, seeing friends and working with them to succeed in the coming weeks. Please reach out if you need any support as we transition back to school routines!

Virginia 2025 School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions

Our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, is conducting the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions. We will survey students in grade 6, as well as classroom instructors and staff, beginning in January 2025.

The purpose of the student survey is to measure student support, student engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions in each school. This information will be used to guide educational practices that produce a safe and supportive school environment.

The survey does not ask for your child’s name and all answers are anonymous. No one, including teachers and administrators, will know how your child answered the survey questions. You will not have access to your child’s survey answers. You may preview the questions asked in the student survey at this website: https://tinyurl.com/VaSchoolSurveyDCJS

If you do not wish for your child to participate, please notify the school office by telephone, email or letter.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results

Students in grades 3-6 took the SEL Screener in October, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.

Holiday Math Tid-Bits!

With the holidays right around the corner, engaging students in their math thinking is easier than you think. With our older learners, bring them along with you to food shop before a big meal. Ask them to find the food with the best unit price. For our younger learners, ask them to round the price of the items to the nearest dollar and then estimate what the total cost would be. And for the youngest learners, they can count the amount of plates set out and make sure there are enough for everyone. These small tasks help to exercise students’ math brains, even when they are home for the holidays!

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

The electronic Impact Aid form is available online through ParentVue

Cafeteria News

To increase respectful, responsible, and safe behavior in the cafeteria, you will see grade level monthly calendars on the bulletin board as you enter the cafeteria!

Additionally, the behavior expectations are posted and pictures of the staff who work in the cafeteria. Each grade level will work to earn “hooves” marked on the calendar each day. If they are able to meet the target (this month is 70%), they will earn an extra recess!

Students are being informed on the daily news and at upcoming grade level town hall meetings with administration and teachers.

Please remind your students to follow the cafeteria expectations!

Full-Time AAP Referral Reminder Reminder: Window for Full-time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form and supplemental materials to Kimberly Verazin at [email protected]  no later than December 15, 2024.

The window for families to submit a referral for full-time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually. All forms may be found on the AAP forms page.  No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for full-time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for full-time placement. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April.

For more information, please visit the  Advanced Academic Programs website.  Feel free to reach out to Mrs. Verazin with any questions at [email protected]

Bucky's Bonus Books

Hello Deer Park Families!

The PTA is holding Bucky's Bonus Books (formerly known as the Free Book Fair) from Wednesday, November 20th until Friday, November 22nd, the sale days at the upcoming school book fair.

For those unfamiliar, the PTA collects donated books year-round to provide every student with a free, new-to-them book during Book Fair week. Whether or not your student is purchasing books, they will visit BBB and be able to pick a free book. This PTA initiative supports literacy and equity with $0 cost but it requires manpower!

Volunteers are needed to help students select books as well as for set up and clean up. If you enjoy interacting with your child's class and/or love books, this will be fun for you!  In the description for each time slot, it says which classes will be visiting during that time.

Sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/buckys

I should be at Bucky's Bonus Books throughout the three day period, no one will be volunteering alone.  Thank you in advance for your help and support!
