A message from Mrs. Taylor, Strings Instructor

Dear Deer Park Family,

I hope you are well and enjoying your summer break! I am writing to let you know that after having the privilege of working with Strings students in the Deer Park community for well over a decade, the 2023-2024 school year was my last year. I have accepted a new position as Orchestra Director at Liberty Middle School. LMS is my neighborhood school and where my own kids will attend school. I hope to have them in my orchestra class one day!

I will immensely miss the DPES Strings students and community! During our time together, I enjoyed the wonderful performances and music making that went on in the Strings classroom and concert venues. It is my wish that the Strings students of Deer Park always enjoy their music and continue to grow with their talent and musical abilities for many years to come. Thank you, Deer Park, for all the wonderful memories and music making opportunities I have been able to enjoy with you for so long. You will always be a special piece of who I am, and I look forward to taking what I have learned and experienced with you into my new position next year. Keep playing and enjoy your summer!

Lot of Hugs,
Mrs. Taylor

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

As the final bell rings for the 2023-2024 school year, we can't help but reflect on all the incredible moments we've shared at Deer Park Elementary. It's been a year filled with laughter, learning, and growth, and we’re incredibly proud of everything our school community has accomplished.

Our students have blossomed in their classrooms, tackling new challenges, and demonstrating a true love of learning. From mastering their multiplication tables to writing their first compelling stories, they've shown dedication and a willingness to push their boundaries. Whether it was during STEAM Lab experiments, book fairs that sparked imaginations, or field trips that opened doors to new experiences, the halls of Deer Park have buzzed with an energy that's truly inspiring.

A huge thank you goes to our dedicated teachers and staff who have nurtured our students' curiosity and fostered a safe and supportive learning environment. Their passion for education is evident in everything they do, and it's been a privilege to witness their commitment to each child's success.

We also extend our deepest gratitude to all of you, our amazing parents, and guardians. Your unwavering support, both at home and through your involvement in school activities, plays a vital role in your child's education. We couldn't do it without you!

Now, as we head into summer break, it's time for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. We encourage our students to explore new hobbies, spend time with loved ones, and continue to read and learn in their own way. Remember, the joy of discovery doesn't stop at the school doors!

To everyone in the Deer Park community, we wish you a safe, healthy, and truly wonderful summer. We look forward to welcoming you back for another exciting year of learning and growth in August!

With warmest regards,

Mr. D’Amato & Mrs. Hitz

Deer Park - Silver Status!

We have some exciting news from the Green Team!  Deer Park has achieved Silver Status Certification with the National Wildlife Foundation's EcoSchools US  inititative!

Within this system, Silver is the second of four certifications we aim to achieve over the next few years; our student leaders' tremendous efforts allowed them to skip over the first step (bronze status), and go straight to the second.

We could not be any prouder of our wonderful student leaders, and the school community’s commitment to seeing this through. There is more work to be done, but this represents an important milestone for our school and community. Be on the lookout for our end-of-year newsletter with a brief survey on the Green Team's next steps.

We look forward to building on this auspicious recognition and wildly successful school year in the years ahead!

CONGRATULATIONS, DEER PARK!

-Mr. Wallace and Mrs. Marco

Exciting News at Deer Park!

It is with great excitement that we announce our partnership with the Asha-Jyothi foundation for the upcoming school year. Through their “Educate-Innovate USA Campaign,” Deer Park will be receiving over $100,000 to recreate our STEAM Lab into the Bucky’s Learning Lab and to upgrade and enhance our Bucky’s Rest Stop. The Learning Lab space will be meant to inspire the future inventors, engineers, and makers at Deer Park and hopefully to reach beyond our community to serve our entire Western Fairfax family. Our Rest Stop is an area where students can come to reenergize and refocus so they can access learning throughout the day. With the installment of state of the art sensory items ALL students will have the opportunity to visit this space.  The AJ campaign builds on the core belief that every student can and should have access to these types of spaces and we are thrilled to be able to bring this to Deer Park. We look forward to unveiling our new spaces to you in the fall.

Sign up now for the 16th Annual 5K Run/Walk on September 15th, 2024 at 8:00 a.m. Register now  to support Deer Park and Asha-Jyothi, serving the needs of the underprivileged by providing access to education and healthcare.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE.   For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener  webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or  contact your student's teacher.

Deer Park has inclusive PreK/Head Start program that started in the 2023-24 school year to provide a quality preschool experience with comprehensive services at no cost to qualifying families, who reside in Fairfax County. Though families may qualify, spaces are limited, and selection is based on need, not “first come, first serve”, with PreK priority given to 4 year olds and Deer Park based students. More information and the application in both Spanish and English can be found at this link early-childhood-prek/fecep-head-start-application

This program will be in addition our existing preschool Special Education Class Based program and our Preschool Autism Program. If you think your preschooler has a developmental delay or a disability contact Child Find for FCPS. Child Find is the process of identifying children with potential special education needs. Child Find screenings are free to residents of FCPS whose child is 2 through 5 years old. registration/early-childhood-prek/early-childhood-child-find

Hello Deer Park!

The PTA is continuing its initiative to provide each and every student with a free, gently used book during Book Fair week via Bucky's Bonus Books (formerly known as the Free Book Fair). Bucky's Bonus Books (BBB) has a sign-up for volunteers to help children select books this week and help is still needed! The sign-up indicates which classes will be attending BBB during each time slot so that you can sign up to help when your student's class will be selecting books. Help is needed setting up after school tomorrow (Tues. 4/23) as well as during the school day Wed. 4/24 - Fri. 4/26. I plan to be present and volunteering throughout BBB, volunteers will not be there alone!

If you are able to help, please click here to sign up:
www.signupgenius.com

Thank you once again for the amazing books donated by our community that make Bucky's Bonus Books possible!  The donations and volunteer time are truly appreciated by the students and the PTA.

Dear Deer Park Families:

Hello from the Deer Park Student Council Association!  The SCA will be sponsoring its annual community food drive, beginning next week (Monday, 04/15/2024)!

As we considered the drive this year, one number came to mind: 42424.  Our goal is simple: we hope to raise 424 pounds of donated food by 4/24/24.

To add a fun wrinkle this year, the SCA’s student leaders offered awesome themes that you may choose to participate in!  The themes are:

  • Taco Tuesday: seasonings, hard shells, canned/jarred salsa, rice bags, cans of refried beans, canned chicken, canned tomatoes
  • They Say It’s Your Birthday!: disposable baking pan, cake mix, frosting, cooking oil (olive, canola, vegetable, etc.), baking flour, sugar, brown sugar
  • Let’s Grill Out: salt, pepper, condiments (bottles of ketchup, mustard, mayo), jarred pickles, canned vegetables, chips
  • Something easy, please: Chef Boyardee pasta cups, Hamburger Helper boxes, Pasta Helpers
  • Pasta Night: Boxes of pasta, risotto, jars of pasta sauces
  • Breakfast!: pancake/waffle mix, cooking oils, unopened boxes of oatmeal, grits, cereals, coffee (ground only), individual low sugar juice boxes

If your family would like to donate, please do; however, don’t feel like you have to donate all of the items from a category!  Any and all donations of the above items are welcome and appreciated.

All donations must be unopened and in original packaging; they will be given to FCPS Ignite Partner  and Deer Park Community Partner, Western Fairfax Christian Ministries.  This charity is open to any member of the Centreville and Chantilly community.

Should you have any questions, please reach out to Mr. Wallace ([email protected]), or Ms. Arzt ([email protected]) .

Sincerely,

Matthew Wallace and Catherine Arzt

☀️ Total Solar Eclipse on April 8 ☀️

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

At Deer Park Elementary School, out of an abundance of caution, we will provide students with approved eyewear at dismissal. Please talk to your student about keeping the glasses on to safely view the eclipse.

Maintaining our priority on safety, Deer Park will not be sending students outside after 2 PM. Students and staff will be provided with the NASA livestream link as an option to safely observe the eclipse.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.

Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal), and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation or you are welcome to pick your student up early to view the eclipse at home.

FCPS has a page that shares information about Solar Eclipses at https://www.fcps.edu/solar-eclipse.
