Fun Fit Fridays!

We are excited to begin using our Deer Park track again for our morning community building each week. As part of our wellness initiative, we invite you and your child(ren) to Fun Fit Friday.  Students in all grade levels (PK-6) are welcome to participate, as well as parents and teachers!

Fun Fit Friday will meet on Friday mornings from 8:10 - 8:30 AM beginning on Friday, September 27 and run through Friday, December 6th. We will then resume in March.

This is an excellent opportunity for your child to meet new friends, enjoy the benefits of exercising, and develop an appreciation for fitness. We hope this program builds self-confidence and improves fitness levels among our students and within the community. Everyone is welcome to join us!

If it is raining or the track surroundings are too muddy, then we will cancel for that Friday.  There will be communication sent out the morning of by 7:45 a.m.  If you do not receive Deer Park News You Choose updates, please sign up at this link: subscriber accounts

* October 4th is a student holiday - No Fun Fit Friday on 10/4

Thank you Deer Park Community!

The Asha-Jyothi Fun Run last Sunday was an amazing day of fun, community spirit and great exercise. We had 128 Deer Park registrations! Thank you families for coming out to participate and cheer on our runners!

Special Olympics Unified School

Join us as we strive to make Deer Park a Special Olympics Unified School. We started this process in 2019 and were derailed by COVID.

We need to do 3 things:

  1. Form a Unified School Committee
  2. Provide Educational Training opportunities for students and staff about People with Disabilities
  3. Plan a Unified Special Olympics Sports Event this Spring.

We are excited about restarting this event, 2019 was pretty awesome!

If you would like to participate in this committee, we are holding an interest meeting after school on 9/24 in the library at 3:45pm. Parents and Staff are invited.

Can't come in person? Please join us via Zoom at this link!

Please contact Samara Stephen-Dowd [email protected] or Karey Dennis, [email protected] if you have specific questions before the meeting on 9/24.

Attendance
  • 🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit our website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that assistance can be provided if needed. Keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

Read about how families can help form good attendance habits.  Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

  • ✔️ Parent/Caregiver Checklist: Have You Completed These Important Forms?

We understand that the multiple school forms caregivers receive during the first weeks of school can feel overwhelming, but each one helps set your child up for a successful school year! If you do not have a SIS ParentVUE account, please contact your child’s school for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account webpage.

📋 Permission Forms

Families can easily grant permission for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. Parents can opt their child in or out of resources including online educational tools, school counseling services, and tutoring services. They can also change how student information is managed. Visit the Parent Digital Consent webpage  to access the system. Watch this video to see how to use the tool.

  • 🎤 Our Schools, Our Future: Register Today for a Community Conversation!

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will host a series of Community Conversations this fall. She invites you to share your thoughts and ask questions. The next event is schuled for Monday, September 23,  6:30-7:30 p.m. at Newington Forest Elementary School.  Click on the date to register. Childcare and language interpretation services will be provided.

Educational Assembly - Curtis Blues

Our students will have a special treat next week. We will have multi-instrumentalist, Curtis Blues, performing with fascinating instruments in his Language Arts curriculum aligned show. The assembly is on the Multicultural Roots of the American Music Program. He will demonstrate multi-cultural American musical history that created popular music today.

This assembly program touches on many 21st Century skills and connections, as well as celebrating the lives of specific African-Americans who changed musical history. A highlight of the show for students is when we write a short blues song together using student generated sensory based prompts.

Students will also learn about responsible green practices and how they can use discarded items to create muscial instruments!

You can see more about the program at this link!

Dogtown Happenings One School, One Book: Fall 2024

This fall all Deer Park students are reading Dogtown by Katherine Applegate and Gennifer Choldenko. It is the heartwarming tale of a shelter dog that finds friendship in an unlikely place and learns to never give up hope. Students will be learning a little bit about what it’s like to be a shelter dog.

Many fun activities are accompanying the reading including sharing your own pet photos, Coins for Critters, a service project and donations.

Please find more information at this link:  Dogtown Happenings and join the fun.

In support of the FCPS goal of raising ethical and global citizens, Deer Park will be hosting a supply drive to collect needed items for the animals at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. Your family can help by donating items, purchasing items off an Amazon wish list, or donating money to Coins for Critters.  Shelter wish list here.

Blue Star Welcome Week

September 21st to September 29th

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 21 - September 29, 2024, and throughout the year! #BlueStarWelcomeWeekFCPS

New Staff

This week we introduce
Denise Wilson, School Psychologist,
Beth Lonergan, School Social Worker, Heather Betsayad, Speech Teacher  and Naureen Siddiqi, Special Education Teacher.

Denise Wilson

Hi ! I’m Denise Wilson. I’ve been a school psychologist for 16 years, 5 in FCPS. I have 3 daughters and a kitty cat named Miss Kitty. I enjoy photography, arts/crafts and pickleball. I’m excited to be here at Deer Park ES !

Beth Lonergan

My name is Beth Lonergan and this is my first year as a social worker at Deer Park ES. I am here on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and am looking forward to working with the Deer Park students and community.  I also work at Robinson High School.  I’ve worked in FCPS for over 20 years, but part of that time was as a third-grade teacher at White Oaks ES. I received my Bachelors Degree in Social Work from JMU (Go Dukes) and my Masters Degree in Social Work from Boston College. I also have a Masters Degree in Education from Marymount University. My two sons graduated from Fairfax High School and are both in college – one is at Penn State and the other attends The University of Delaware. I love sports and am a big Capitals and Orioles fan. My husband and I like to cook and take our very rambunctious dog, Scout, for walks.

Heather Betsayad

Here is my family apple picking. We are trying to soak in all the beautiful weather! We moved to Virginia this summer from Alaska, but I’m originally from Colorado. I have 3 kids, a 15 yo old son, and 7- and 8-year-old daughters.  I worked as a kindergarten/1st grade teacher then went back to become a SLP.  I love to do anything outdoors including hiking, skiing, biking or watching kid’s sports games.  I appreciate this friendly school and all the help this year so far.

Naureen Siddiqi

Hi, my name is Naureen Siddiqi. I am a new special education teacher for kindergarten through second grade. I am married and have two sons. They both are college students and I have been involved in their education since elementary school and have learned all challenges a student can face during their educational journey. I have worked with kids who have behavior difficulties and learning difficulties but they find the way to achieve their goals. I have a passion for travelling also and want to see the whole world and learn new things. I am glad to join Deer Park community.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Students in Gr 3 - 6

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) believes in supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) for all students. In FCPS, students use a tool called the SEL Screener to think about their own SEL skills and experiences at school. Deer Park students in grades 3 - 6 will be participating in the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in the Fall and Spring.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information about the SEL Screener including information on opting out please see the attached SEL Screener Parent Notification. Attendance Matters

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Visit FCPS' Attendance webpage  for tips and strategies.

Please take a moment to review the FCPS calendar  and plan accordingly. We understand family vacations and travel can be opportunities for learning and are important, however, we request you plan trips around the school schedule. Vacations outside the FCPS holidays are considered unexcused. Any student with 18 or more absences is considered chronically absent even when absences are excused.

Learn more about FCPS Attendance expectations here.

One Book, One School Dogtown by Katherine Applegate and Gennifer Choldenko

One School, One Book is back at Deer Park for Fall 2024! This year classroom teachers will be reading Dogtown by Katherine Applegate and Gennifer Choldenko to all students at school! Everyone will be reading or listening to the same pages on the same day as we strengthen our sense of community through the shared joy of reading and literacy. Families are invited to join us in our reading adventure and talk about this fantastic story with their children. (See reading schedule below)

A little bit about Dogtown from a summary on Amazon…Dogtown is a shelter for stray dogs, misbehaving dogs, and discarded robot dogs, whose owners have outgrown them. Chance, a real dog, has been in Dogtown since her owners unwittingly left her with irresponsible dog-sitters who skipped town. Metal Head is a robot dog who dreams of being back in a real home. And Mouse is a mouse who has the run of Dogtown, pilfering kibble, and performing clever feats to protect the dogs he loves. When Chance and Metal Head embark on an adventure to find their forever homes, there is danger, cheese sandwiches, a charging station, and some unexpected kindnesses along the way.

In conjunction with this program, we will be hosting a supply drive for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter….be on the lookout for further details about how you can help!

We hope you will read along with us from
September 9 – October 9!

Ms. Stephanie Jennings, Reading Specialist,
Ms.Dana Meyer, 5th Grade Teacher and
Ms. Rachel O'Connell, Strings Teacher.

Ms. Beka Hartl, Reading Specialist   Ms. Stephanie Jennings, Reading Specialist

My name is Stephanie Jennings. I am so excited to be at Deer Park this year. I am serving as your Reading Specialist. I am starting my 20th year in the county.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, supporting my nieces and nephew in their activities, working puzzles and reading. I like playing games, but prefer to watch sports (especially the Steelers and the Penguins).  I am a Pittsburgh girl at heart. My husband and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary this summer. We have a small pomeranian named Kara with a big attitude.

Ms. Dana Meyer, 5th Grade Teacher   Ms. Rachel O'Connell, Strings Teacher

Hello!  My name is Rachel O'Connell, and I am the new Strings teacher here at Deer Park!  After 7 years of teaching Orchestra at Franklin Middle School in Chantilly, I’m excited to work with students who are just beginning their musical journey.  I went to school at George Mason University where I was part of the Green Machine Pep Band that played at basketball games and other special events.  This experience of playing different genres of music is something that I enjoy sharing with students, and I look forward to helping them explore all the opportunities that music has to offer.  In my free time I like to sing and make music with my family, read, play board games, and spend time outside.

Hello Deer Park Students and Families!

Please take a moment to read through our Summer Newsletter at the link below to celebrate the Green Team’s successes with us, and to fill out the survey QR code at the bottom.  Your input is vital and appreciated!

Patrol News

Hello Fifth Grade Parents!

What an awesome start to the year this has been! This is Mr. Wallace and Ms. Fuchs, and we are Deer Park’s Patrol Sponsors. We have received a lot of interest from our fifth grade students and families about becoming a Patrol as the year has begun, and wanted to pass along some information.

Patrols are a spectacular leadership opportunity that we offer primarily to our Sixth Grade students. From time to time, specific school needs require us to ask for fifth grade students to step into these roles; for instance, if we do not have enough interested sixth graders who ride a given bus, we may ask fifth graders on that bus if they are interested.

Our hope in sending this email is to gauge interest and availability among our fifth graders who may be able to fill specific needs as they arise. Joining this list does not guarantee a Patrol position for our fifth grade students this year; however, all of our fifth grade students will have the opportunity to be a Patrol as they enter into sixth grade next year should they choose so.

If your student is interested, please click here to fill out the Patrol Interest Form.

Should you have any questions, please reach out to us directly: [email protected] and [email protected].

Thank you!

-Ms. Fuchs and Mr. Wallace

  Our Voices, Our Future:
Multilingual Learners Summit

All multilingual learners and their families are invited to attend a summit today, Thursday, August 8, 2024 from 5-8:30 p.m. at Annandale High School. The summit will be primarily geared for secondary multilingual learners, but all are welcome to attend. The goal of the summit is to foster an environment of empowerment where multilingual students and their families can establish meaningful connections, engage in active listening, and openly share their experiences, cultivating mutual support and a deeper understanding of educational pathways within FCPS.

This event will begin with a table fair showcasing many opportunities available within FCPS and the wider community that support paths to graduation and future careers for students.  Additionally, a keynote will be presented by Dr. Jose Luis Zelaya who will share a message about the power of community and resilience.  A student panel will dialogue with Dr. Zelaya following the keynote.

Greetings from the Deer Park Health Room!

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) School Health Division’s primary goal is to promote the overall health and well-being of school-aged children.  The School Health Division consists of Public Health Nurses (PHNs) and School Health Aides (SHAs) who provide a variety of services to accomplish this goal.  PHNs develop individualized health care/action plans for students with complex health conditions and provide health training to school staff to support students’ health needs during the school day. Meanwhile, SHAs deliver direct care to sick and injured students by following standardized protocols or individualized health care/action plans. They are also responsible for administering medications and conducting vision and hearing screenings.

 School Health Room Services Include:

  1. Care of sick and injured students in accordance with the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Health Emergency Temporary Care Guidelines and students’ individualized health care/action plans, if applicable.
  2. Administration of medication provided by parents/guardians with proper authorization completed by their health care provider.
  3. Coordination of care for students with chronic health conditions during the school day.
  4. Hearing and vision screening (grades K, 3, 7, 10, new to FCPS, and those students referred by teachers and parents/guardians)

How can you help your school health room provide the best possible care?

  1. Complete and submit the FCPS medication authorization forms annually, as applicable:
  1. Provide the school with properly labeled containers (your pharmacist will usually provide an extra container if requested). Only a 30-day supply of prescription medication should be brought into school at a time. It is the parent/guardian's responsibility to bring additional refills, if needed, to the school.
  2. Medications must be transported to and from school by a parent/guardian; except, with parent/guardian approval, a high school student may carry over-the-counter (OTC) medications to and from the school health room and pick up the backup medication from the health room with documented parent/guardian permission.
  3. Medications must be kept in the school health room or other school-approved location unless approved for the student to carry it during school hours. Students approved to carry their own medication, should have a second dose kept in the school health room.
  4. OTC medication for headache, muscle ache, orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps may be given as needed throughout the school year with only the parent/ guardian signature on part II of the FCPS Medication Authorization Form. No more than 100 pills/tablets of OTC medication should be brought to school at a time (must be in unopened original container/packaging).
  5. OTC medications other than pain relievers may be given up to ten consecutive school days with the parent/guardian signature on the FCPS Medication Authorization form before a health care provider’s authorization is required.
  6. Cough drops and throat lozenges may be carried and used by students in kindergarten through grade 12 as needed throughout the school year, provided that they are in the original container or packaging. Students must not share cough drops or throat lozenges under any circumstances.

Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in helping to make this a safe and healthy school year for all FCPS students.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact either your School Health Aide, Chandu Ramakrishna, at 703-802-5010 or your school Public Health Nurse, Yina Lee, RN, at [email protected].

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY

STUDENTS MAY NOT TAKE MEDICATION AT SCHOOL UNLESS FCPS GUIDELINES ARE FOLLOWED:

  1. Parent or guardian may authorize administration of the following medications at school by completing, signing, and dating Parts l & ll of the FCPS Medication Authorization:
  • Over-the-counter medication may be given on an as-needed basis throughout the school year ONLY as a pain reliever for headaches, muscle aches, orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps.
  • Over-the-counter medication for conditions other than those above may be given up to ten consecutive school days.
  • Antibiotics and anti-viral up to ten consecutive school days
  • A physician must complete, sign, and date the order on Part ll of the FCPS Medication Authorization for all medication other than situations noted above. Part l of the authorization form must be completed and signed by the parent or guardian. For epinephrine devices, a physician must complete, sign, and date the order on Part II of the FCPS Authorization for Anaphylaxis Action Plan. For inhalers, a physician must complete, sign and date a Virginia Asthma Action Plan. The Virginia Asthma Action Plan must also be signed and dated by a parent or guardian. In addition, a parent or guardian must complete and sign Part I and Part II on the FCPS Authorization for Virginia Asthma Action Plan.
  • Written medication orders on Part ll of the medication form must include:
    • Diagnosis
    • Name of medication – no abbreviations
    • Dosage in mg, ml, or cc
    • Time at which the medication is to be taken
    • Sequence of medication when more than one is prescribed
    • The exact condition or symptom if given on an as-needed basis
    • Interval between dosages – repeat as necessary is not acceptable
    • Duration of medication order or effective dates
  • Medication label MUST match written order:
    • All prescribed medication, including physician samples, must be in a container labeled and dated by a pharmacist or physician with name of student, name of medication, dosage, and time to be taken.
    • All over-the-counter medication must be in the original container and labeled by parent or guardian with name of student, dosage, route, and time to be taken.
    1. The first dose of any new medication must be given at home.
    2. The parent or guardian must transport medication to and from school.
    3. At the beginning of each school year a new medication form is required. Forms are in the health room or online at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/forms.
    4. Each time there is a change in the dosage or time, a new authorization form is required. The new medication order and container label must match.
    5. Students must go to the health room to receive medication. Parents should develop a plan with the student to ensure that he or she goes to the health room at the prescribed time. Medication can only be given one-half hour before or one-half hour after the prescribed time.
    6. For as-needed medication, parents should inform health room if the medication was given at home before school hours. This will prevent students from receiving medication too close to an earlier dose.
    7. Parent or guardian must collect any unused portion of medication within one week after expiration of the effective date on the order form. Medication not claimed within that period will be discarded.
    8. Medication that has not been picked up by the closing bell on the last day of the school year will be discarded.

    Thank you!

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

We hope this summer has been a time of rest, relaxation, and fun for you and your family. Whether you’ve enjoyed beach days, family vacations, or simply spending quality time together at home, we hope these past few months have been rejuvenating.

As the days grow shorter and the leaves begin to change color, we are filled with excitement for the start of a new school year at Deer Park! We can’t wait to welcome back our returning students and families, and to introduce ourselves to our new students and their families.

We are thrilled to announce that we will be welcoming several new staff members to our school community this year. This includes Stephanie Jennings (Reading Specialist), Rebekah Hartl (Reading Specialist / ESOL), Jen Franconeri (School Counselor), Allison Wilding (classroom teacher), Wilson Johnson (classroom teacher), Dana Meyer (classroom teacher), Naureen Siddiqi (Special Education teacher), Claire Marcheski (Instructional Assistant), Salwa Suliman (Instructional Assistant), Cinthyia Montenegro (Instructional Assistant), Ramya Kannan (Preschool Teacher) and Erin Johnson (Instructional Assistant). We are confident that their expertise and enthusiasm will be a valuable asset to our school.

In addition to new staff, we are thrilled to be unveiling several new changes happening in our school building. At the end of last school year, in collaboration with the Asha Jyothi Foundation, we were gifted a grant worth over $100,000 towards the renovation and remodeling of both our STEAM lab and Bucky’s Rest Stop. All students will have access and opportunities to explore, learn and grow in both spaces at various times throughout this school year. We hope to have an official grand opening of these new spaces this Fall. More information to come. As a way to continue to strengthen our partnership with them, we would like to encourage families to sign up for the Annual AJ 5k Fun Run/Walk in Fairfax, VA on Sunday, September 15th at 8:00 AM. Use the code AJ4Schools for a discount on registration. All registration fees will be returned directly to Deer Park to be used for students. Please note that you do not need to attend the race in order for the school to benefit from the funds donated.

Deer Park was also designated as a silver award recipient for our Green Schools initiative. This school year, we hope to build off this work by creating a functional, outdoor learning space. Additionally, at the end of last school year, we engaged in discussions regarding our recess and lunch policies. In the spring, we shared our updated revisions, but look forward to reviewing them again with you through our Back to School Night video.

To help you plan ahead, we wanted to share some important dates:

    • August 14th – Class placements will be sent through e-notify sometime after 4:00 pm
