Holiday Math Tid-Bits!

With the holidays right around the corner, engaging students in their math thinking is easier than you think. With our older learners, bring them along with you to food shop before a big meal. Ask them to find the food with the best unit price. For our younger learners, ask them to round the price of the items to the nearest dollar and then estimate what the total cost would be. And for the youngest learners, they can count the amount of plates set out and make sure there are enough for everyone. These small tasks help to exercise students’ math brains, even when they are home for the holidays!

AAP Information Reminder

Recess

Please remind your students to dress appropriately for the weather. Students have recess every day, weather permitting, so make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors.

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how closing decisions are made.   FCPS' website  is the first place to find out about emergency weather closings along with email, text, social media and news stations!

Federal Impact Aid Forms

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE.  If you have not already filled out the form online, paper forms were provided last week in your child's Thursday folder. If you need another copy, please contact our Registrar.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

The electronic Impact Aid form is available online through ParentVue
until January 31, 2025

We need 100% participation.  Thank you for your support!

Cafeteria News

To increase respectful, responsible, and safe behavior in the cafeteria, you will see grade level monthly calendars on the bulletin board as you enter the cafeteria!

Additionally, the behavior expectations are posted and pictures of the staff who work in the cafeteria. Each grade level will work to earn “hooves” marked on the calendar each day. If they are able to meet the target (this month is 70%), they will earn an extra recess!

Students are being informed on the daily news and at upcoming grade level town hall meetings with administration and teachers.

Please remind your students to follow the cafeteria expectations!

Full-Time AAP Referral Reminder Reminder: Window for Full-time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form and supplemental materials to Kimberly Verazin at [email protected]  no later than December 15, 2024.

The window for families to submit a referral for full-time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually. All forms may be found on the AAP forms page.  No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for full-time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for full-time placement. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April.

For more information, please visit the  Advanced Academic Programs website.  Feel free to reach out to Mrs. Verazin with any questions at [email protected]

Bucky's Bonus Books

Hello Deer Park Families!

The PTA is holding Bucky's Bonus Books (formerly known as the Free Book Fair) from Wednesday, November 20th until Friday, November 22nd, the sale days at the upcoming school book fair.

For those unfamiliar, the PTA collects donated books year-round to provide every student with a free, new-to-them book during Book Fair week. Whether or not your student is purchasing books, they will visit BBB and be able to pick a free book. This PTA initiative supports literacy and equity with $0 cost but it requires manpower!

Volunteers are needed to help students select books as well as for set up and clean up. If you enjoy interacting with your child's class and/or love books, this will be fun for you!  In the description for each time slot, it says which classes will be visiting during that time.

Sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/buckys

I should be at Bucky's Bonus Books throughout the three day period, no one will be volunteering alone.  Thank you in advance for your help and support!

Impact Aid

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, schools will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers

Food and Nutrition Services
October News

Food and Nutrition Services want to help your child make healthy choices in the cafeteria. Here are some tips to encourage healthy eating habits:

Breakfast is Key
● Encourage your child to eat a balanced breakfast. A nutritious breakfast can help them focus and perform better in class. A nutritious breakfast is offered daily at your child’s school.

Smart Snacking
● Pack healthy snacks for your child to enjoy. Fruits and vegetables, like the ones featured on our salad bars, are great in between meal snack.

Mindful Eating
● Teach your child to eat slowly and savor their food. This can help them feel satisfied without over consumption.

Hydration is Essential
● Encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid sugary drinks and excessive juice.

Explore New Foods
● Encourage your child to try new foods in the cafeteria. Variety is key to a healthy diet. Review the school's menu  with your child and discuss new foods to try!

Involve Your Child in Meal Planning
● Let your child help choose meals and snacks. This can make them more excited about healthy eating and assist during those picky eating stages.

Remember, small changes can make a big difference. By following these tips, you can help your child develop healthy eating habits that will benefit them for
years to come.
