School Counseling

Our Counseling Program

The elementary counseling program at Deer Park is a child-centered, preventive, and developmental program that complements learning in the classroom. We work with teachers and parents to help maximize each student's potential. We encourage students' social, emotional, and personal growth at each stage of their development. To accomplish this, we conduct monthly counseling lessons, run groups and lunch bunches, as well as consult with parents, teachers, and other professionals.

In addition to our work with the students, we are available to talk with parents, provide workshops, help with resources in the community and provide support to all of our Deer Park families. We love working with your students and if there is any way we can help make your child's year more successful, please feel free to contact us at the school at 703-802-5000 or by email.

Deer Park is lucky to have two full-time school counselors to help our students and their families have a great year!

Mrs. Cottrell will be working with Kindergarten (Muscar and Southerland), 2nd, 4th, & 6th grades

Miss Comer will be working with Kindergarten (Morris), 1st, 3rd, & 5th grades

Both counselors will be teaching classroom lessons related to our school-wide social-emotional learning themes. We encourage you to open a conversation with your students about these topics and practice these social-emotional learning skills at home. This year’s themes are as follows:

August/September- Self-Management

October- Growth Mindset

November/December- Wellness

January/February- Kindness

March/April - Equity

As always, we invite you to reach out to the school counseling teams with any questions or concerns you may have.
